The primary school at Scole is interestingly situated almost exactly on the border between Norfolk and Suffolk. Children prepared for the first Sainsbury Centre visit by working on the history of the village in terms of its tudor buildings and medieval church. This provided a useful basis for examining the artefacts, allowing comparisons to be made ranging from pattern and decoration to spiritual beliefs and different values. On the first visit we worked from objects that the children brought in and artefacts from the Sainsbury Centre, making connections and associations that ranged from observations about pattern to ideas about different beliefs. On the second visit these links and ideas were deepened and extended, this time via involvement in the exciting outdoor process of raku firing.
